The Bath Safe Bus and Bath College are collaborating to support 16 Days of Action (25th Nov – 10th Dec) Against Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG). These are our top tips for students on how to be an active bystander and to take positive action in preventing and responding to VAWG on nights out:
- Notice when something seems ‘off’ – Trust your instincts, if someone is looking uncomfortable or pressured to go somewhere – be empowered to act in a safe way
- Challenge harmful behaviour and ‘jokes’ – Casual sexism and sexist jokes normalise VAG. Call it out – “That’s not funny” Small social corrections help shift the culture
- Tell someone! – If something doesn’t look right, alert venue staff, door staff, City Marshals or your friends. They’re there to help!
- Keep yourself safe while helping – Prioritise your own safety. You can support others without putting yourself at risk!
- Know your safe spaces – If someone needs help, guide them to a safe place. The Bath Safe Bus is out on Fridays & Saturdays by Bath Abbey, Orange Grove, 10.30pm – 4am
Together, we can make nights out safer for everyone!
