In the middle weekend of the 70th Anniversary Festival, to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Leonard Bernstein’s birth, Bath Festivals is presenting a concert performance of West Side Story, one of the greatest of all musicals.
The energy and excitement of the performance is guaranteed through the make-up of the cast. The lead roles of Maria and Tony are sung by rising stars at the start of their professional career with Gemma Summerfield as Maria, who in 2015 won the distinguished Kathleen Ferrier Prize – the leading international competition that sifts out the young stars of tomorrow.
All other soloists are currently training at the Guildhall School of Music. Timothy Redmond, Professor of Conducting at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and regular guest conductor with the London Symphony and Royal Philharmonic Orchestras, conducts the brilliant Bath Philharmonia.
A children’s choir perform in the concert as one of the outputs from a large scales schools’ project that is being designed and delivered by Wiltshire Music Centre, through the summer term, around the timeless themes and fantastic music of West Side Story.
A community chorus of adults has also been created for this exciting Festival community event. This retelling of the story of Romeo and Juliet, set in 1950s New York is full of amazing songs and the evening of great numbers will send you singing out into the night.
