Westgate Street
Westgate is not only of historical importance within the city but is a vital street in connecting pedestrians from the main shopping spine to Kingsmead Square.
Bath City Centre Management were the inspiring force of this project bringing together landowners, tenants, retailers, businesses, the council and other organisations such as the Big Issue, in putting together a cleanup programme for this street.
From the pictures and report below, the difference made was clearly visible. The project included:
- Deep cleansing of the street
- Retailers attended a window display course given my Marks and Spencer
- Buildings were cleaned of bird excrement with landlords pooling resources making it cost effective
- The Big Issue office was painted
- Empty units were better presented or under refurbishment
- Landlords encouraged tenants to correct defects
- Police were involved in tackling crime issues in the area
- Parking Services provided greater enforcement of parking
- Highways repaved the street (2010) as part of the Public Realm and Movement Strategy
- Komedia provided a venue for those involved to meet regularly free of charge
This collective effort demonstrated what could be achieved with the community coming together, pooling resources and working in partnership. It became apparent that the success was down to all of the partners working together rather than waiting for someone else to take the initiative.
